27yo FDNYer Michael Gorumba passes physical but allegedly drops dead (on Tuesday, 8/28/2001) of heart attack, while merely handling a hose, at an auto-shop fire whose cause is unknown.
Movie falsely leads us to think his death was FROM FIRE. The context is that our rookie Tony hasn't had a fire yet -- but, "Be careful what you wish for," the elders warn the filmmakers. Segue to dead staten island rookie michael gorumba, passed away "at" (not from) a fire. Tony's presence at funeral (on Saturday, 01 Sept2001) has a different background from the rest of the funeral shots. More closely situated buildings, less suburban. No one else at all whom we know from Tony's firehouse is standing anywhere near tony during the funeral formation. Some brotherhood. Some unit cohesion in troubled times. Creepy bloody W-shaped incision on Tony's face, at funeral, jumps from his right cheek to his left, one of at least three times in the movie where the "documentary filmmakers" are incontrovertibly shown to have altered (this time by mirror-imaging) their own footage This wound is also discernible (on Tony's right cheek) during tony's subway ride to the funeral (in Staten Island) Two different firetrucks appear in the funeral footage. They don't match. The one that lacks a black funeral banner also has different wiper placement and headlight configuration. They used that one in Tony's scene, which was filmed somewhere else, not at the real funeral. I surmise they accidentally filmed that second, mismatched truck DRIVING THE WRONG WAY, and then they mirror-imaged it to match the real funeral firetruck's direction of travel, and that mirror-image resulted in the W-shaped right cheek wound suddenly jumping to tony's LEFT cheek. Tony' hand salute at the funeral is disrespectfully rendered. American salutes are not supposed to let the palm OR ESPECIALLY THE THUMB show. It is also disrespectful that tony is WHISTLING (sounds like "When the Saints Go Marching In") on his way up the firehouse steps to lower the flag to half-mast. And when Tony recounts of Gorumba's death, Tony seems to be having trouble getting his lines out smoothly, and suppressing a smile. |
